0.1.9

Latest

Tables and images survive copy and paste between Folra and other apps, and notes with Windows line endings keep them.

  • Pasting a table from a web page, a Folra export or Copy Table As HTML keeps its column alignment, its images, the formulas Folra drew as images, and line breaks at the end of a cell or inside code.
  • Pasting from web pages no longer brings in tracking pixels, and emoji a site draws as images come in as the emoji.
  • Copying with Cmd-C or Copy Table As HTML takes the note's own images along, so they show up in Mail, Pages and TextEdit. Only images in the note's folder go along.
  • Cmd-C finishes at once: the rich text other apps read is made when they read it.
  • In notes with Windows (CRLF) line endings, Return, paste, and the Table and Format commands write CRLF too, so the saved file no longer mixes line endings, and table commands no longer add an empty column.

0.1.8

Tables look the same in exports and Quick Look as in the editor, and Folra checks for updates each time it opens.

  • Table cells in HTML and PDF exports and in the Quick Look preview now show formulas, bold, italic, code, highlights, strikethrough, links, images and <br> line breaks the way the editor draws them, instead of their Markdown source.
  • Centered and right-aligned table columns keep their alignment in exports and Quick Look.
  • Format > Table > Copy Table As > HTML keeps the cells' formatting, so a table pasted into Mail or Pages looks right.
  • Pasting a table from a web page keeps the line breaks inside its cells.
  • Folra checks for updates in the background each time it opens, as well as once a day. Turning off Check for Updates Automatically in Settings > General turns off both.

0.1.7

Press Space on a note in the Finder to see it as Folra lays it out, and Folra is a third smaller.

  • Quick Look: select a Markdown note in the Finder and press Space to see it rendered in your Folra theme, with code colors, formulas, Mermaid diagrams and the images in its folder, without opening Folra. Very long notes show their first part, with a line saying so.
  • The app is 15 MB instead of 23 MB.
  • Exported pages show ![[image]] embeds as images; they were broken images before.
  • Long code blocks always get their exact colors in exported pages.

0.1.6

Notes with many diagrams open fast again, and diagrams use far less memory.

  • Notes with many Mermaid diagrams open much faster: a note of 60 diagrams went from about 4.8 to 1.9 seconds. Long notes draw only the diagrams on their first screens as they open, and the rest as you reach them.
  • Diagrams no longer keep a bitmap copy each once drawn, so hundreds of them take tens of megabytes instead of up to a gigabyte.
  • Code highlighting and chemistry formulas are faster too.
  • Mermaid source is no longer given random syntax colors while you edit it.

0.1.5

Mermaid diagrams, tables and undo: a new diagram renderer, a menu for tables, and undo that steps back one edit at a time.

  • Mermaid diagrams are now drawn by Pele instead of mermaid.js: they appear the moment a note opens, stay sharp at any size, and cover every diagram type of Mermaid 12.1. They use your theme's colors, charts included. Diagrams look somewhat different from mermaid.js's, and italic text in them is drawn upright.
  • A diagram wider than the text column is scaled down to fit instead of being cut off at the right.
  • With the caret in a table, a ⋮ on the cell's right edge opens the table's menu: copy the table as Markdown, CSV or HTML, align the column, insert, move and delete rows and columns. Right-clicking a table shows the same commands first.
  • Table shortcuts: Control-Command-arrow inserts a row or column on that side, Option-Command-Left/Right moves the column, Control-Command-Delete deletes the row and Control-Shift-Command-Delete the column. In a table, Move Line Up/Down (Option-Command-Up/Down) moves the row.
  • Fixed: Backspace after a line break in a table cell left <br showing in the cell. The line break is now deleted as a whole.
  • Fixed: undoing several edits in a row could put text back in the wrong place, for example gluing a table's last row onto the next paragraph. Each Undo now takes back exactly one edit.

0.1.4

Input methods and formulas behave in tables, and the caret keeps its height on blank lines.

  • The caret on a blank line is as tall as on a line of text; the blank line itself keeps its height.
  • Fixed: typing in a table cell with an input method (pinyin, kana) did not show the text being composed in the cell, the caret could jump to the next cell, and the candidate window sat at the table's bottom-left corner.
  • Fixed: a formula in a table cell sat at the top of its row and pushed the cell's text below the rest of the row. It now sits on the text's baseline, as it does in a paragraph.

0.1.3

Chemistry in formulas, and tables you can move through with the keyboard and hear with VoiceOver.

  • Formulas understand mhchem's \ce and \pu: chemical equations, ions, isotopes, reaction arrows with conditions, precipitates and gases, hydrates and units, such as $\ce{2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O}$.
  • Tables: Tab and Shift-Tab move to the next and previous cell, and Tab in the last cell adds a row.
  • Tables: the arrow keys move cell by cell. Up and Down stay in the column, and Left and Right cross into the next cell in one press.
  • Tables: the window scrolls to the cell you are typing in, and a table wider than the window scrolls sideways to its column.
  • VoiceOver reads the cell you move into in a table: its text, its column header, and its row and column.
  • Large documents open sooner, and every window appears a little faster.
  • Fixed: after typing or pasting above a table, clicking in it could put the caret in the wrong place, and the caret could vanish in its last row.
  • Fixed: clicking where a short row has no cell put the caret at the start of the table, and typing in an empty cell left an extra space.
  • Fixed: typing in a wide table you had scrolled sideways scrolled it back to its left edge.

0.1.2

Faster in long documents, sharper formulas with physics notation, and tables that wrap Chinese and Japanese text.

  • Typing in very long documents is about twice as fast, and large documents open and finish formatting sooner.
  • Formulas are drawn as vectors: sharp at any zoom, and sharper in exported PDFs. Notes full of formulas open faster, and the app is 6MB smaller.
  • Formulas understand the common commands of the LaTeX physics package, such as \dv, \pdv, \abs, \norm, \ket, \braket and \qty.
  • Tables with Chinese or Japanese text wrap to fit the window instead of scrolling sideways.
  • Mermaid diagrams: one that takes too long no longer holds up the diagrams after it, and drawing recovers on its own if the renderer stops.
  • Fixed: after deleting text in a table cell, the table kept showing it until you typed in the table again.
  • Fixed: clicking at the end of a table cell that filled its column could put the caret a few characters early, or in the next row.
  • Fixed: a table too wide for the window stayed blank when the document opened, until you scrolled.
  • Fixed: quitting right after editing a very large document could hang for about a minute.
  • Fixed: text an accessibility tool inserted while Folra was in the background wasn't saved.

0.1.1

Large documents open much faster, plus two fixes.

  • Large documents open much faster: a 5MB note shows formatted within a few seconds, where it took over a minute. The rest is formatted in the background while you read.
  • Fixed: after a URL in inline code, a code block or a [[link]], the bare URLs further on weren't made into links.
  • Fixed: opening a document from the Finder while Folra wasn't running also opened the default folder.

0.1.0

The first public release.

  • Markdown formats as you type; marks like ** and # show only where the caret is.
  • Any folder is a workspace, with Open Quickly, Find in Folder and [[links]] between notes.
  • An outline and the notes that link here, in the side column.
  • Tables, to-dos, callouts, footnotes, LaTeX math and Mermaid diagrams.
  • Two themes, Kinari and Sumi, with your choice of font, size, line width and spacing.
  • Focus and Typewriter modes.
  • Export to PDF and HTML, and print.
  • In English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.
