# Folra

> Folra is a free, native Mac editor that formats Markdown as you type. Notes stay plain .md files in your own folders.

- Price: free to download and use. No account.
- Platform: macOS 15 or later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Mac only: there are no Windows, Linux, iPhone or iPad versions.
- Files: open any folder and it becomes the workspace. Nothing is imported or converted; every note is a .md file that any other editor can open. The folder can be anywhere, including iCloud Drive or another synced folder.
- Editing: Markdown is formatted in place as you type. The marks (`**`, `#`, link addresses) stay in the file and show only where the cursor is. Source mode (⌘/) shows the plain text.
- Interface languages: English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese.

- LaTeX math and Mermaid diagrams, rendered in place
- Tables: add rows, move columns, copy as Markdown, CSV or HTML
- Links between notes: type `[[` and pick a note; backlinks list every note that links here
- An outline that follows the scroll
- Open Quickly (⇧⌘O) and Find in Folder (⇧⌘F)
- Callouts (`> [!NOTE]`), footnotes, task lists, YAML front matter
- Images pasted or dragged in are saved next to the note, in `assets/`
- Focus mode and typewriter mode
- Export to PDF and HTML, or print, with formulas and diagrams
- Two themes: Kinari (warm beige paper) and Sumi (paper and ink, serif headings)
- Native: built with Apple's frameworks, text laid out by TextKit rather than a web view; a 7 MB download, 15 MB installed, universal for Apple silicon and Intel
- Large documents open quickly: the first screens are formatted first, the rest while you read
- Updates itself (Folra > Check for Updates…)
